The ever growing amount of traffic

The ever growing amount of traffic

Published 26.05.2022 (updated: 15.07.2022) in Hetzner, Linux, Self-hosted, Servers.

Phew, It has been almost a year since I started hosting my first public service to the internet. I gotta say that it has been quite a year and I have learned a lot.

I started with SearX hosted on a VPS on Yunohost and quickly became interested.

A few months ago I upgraded to a Hetzner dedicated server because my VPS couldn’t keep up with the traffic anymore.

But since Hetzner is a German company, they are very strict about their TOS and abuse reports. So I can’t host Piped or Nitter directly on my server without getting terminated.

So I had use a VPS to act as a reverse proxy for my services. I chose BuyVM because they are DMCA ignored and they are cheap.

But the problem with reverse proxying is that all traffic goes through the VPS. And so far only this month, I have used 8TB of bandwidth on my VPS. (It was barely 2TB last month)

That is a 400% increase!

Most of the traffic comes from Piped, which proxies video streams from YouTube.

I hope that the traffic doesn’t grow much more or otherwise I have to pay for bandwidth overages (Which is not cheap :D)

That’s it for this update, see you in the next one :)
